Vintage!

Sometimes I forget that things are not as they always were.

Drivers License.

Years ago you did not have your picture on your license.

There were no INSTANT pics...

and you trusted people to say they were who they were.

Does that make sense?

Anyhoo....

My mom was going through some old things and found my Mamaw's license...

from the 1950's.

It was brass with the info stamped into it like a *dog tag.*

Mom mailed it to me and I now have it on my key chain!

Fun facts about South Carolina Driver's License :

It wasn’t until the 1930’s that legislation was passed requiring vehicle drivers
to obtain a driver’s license and pass a driving test to drive legally.

Anyone who was at least 12 years old could obtain a license by
completing an application and paying a $.50 fee.

In 1968, legislation passed requiring color photographs on all driver licenses.

Ironically, state law continued to allow for the issuance of a metal driver’s license to those drivers who had not been suspended or cancelled. These metal licenses resembled a military ‘dog tag’ and included all information on a regular driver’s license except the photograph. A hand-held numbering machine ‘engraved’ the driver’s information into the metal license.

I just thought those facts were cool!

P.S. I saw on license my Mamaw was 5' 5" and weighed 110 lbs.

Geesh!

P.S.S. I googled the apartments where she lived in the 1950's.

They are still there!

Fun!

That is so cool! I have never seen one like that either. It's amazing how much has changed in such a relatively short period of time. I think of it all the time with some of my little sayings like roll down the window, dialing a number, etc.

Very interesting.
My brother needed a license about 15 years ago and didn't have any ID. My mom went with him and promised them that he was who he said he was and he was her son. They issued him a license. I think those days are long gone.

Fun post and interesting too!
Wish I still looked as young as my photo on mine....you know I believe it was taken in 1986...is that weird or what. I could be accused of being an imposter....hmmmm :-(

Hugs!

I have never seen one of these. I need to show this to my mom to see if she has. It's great that you can keep it on your key ring. I'll bet bunches of people will ask you about it.

Now you have to wait for the DMV to send you your license in the mail. Barrett cannot wait to get hers. It takes up to two weeks.

I love family history.

It shows me you are a sentimental person, in that you hooked your mother's license onto your key chain. Great idea! An interesting tidbit of history.

I cannot remember seeing metal license! That is really something! I'll have to ask my dad if it was like that in TN.

Love this series. Hope you are doing well.

Still haven't bloggedd! My 'puter is giving me trouble, and I am getting a new one. Maybe I will be encouraged to do some blogging with a laptop that does not give me issues!
