Pray For The Duggar Family

This article is by Matt Walsh and was published at The Blaze dot com.
"By now you’ve probably heard that Josh Duggar — oldest son in the “19 Kids and Counting” family — did some very bad things a long time ago. Apparently, when he was 14, Josh fondled several young girls, including a number of his younger sisters.
After admitting to these acts, his parents presented the situation to their church’s leadership, and Josh was sent to a family friend in Little Rock where he spent several months doing physical labor. When he came home, his parents brought him to a state trooper. The trooper talked to the boy, but no arrest was made. A police report was filed, though, and Josh and his sisters received counseling.
The behavior stopped there, and Josh has been upfront about it to anyone who actually needs to know this information. According to his wife, he confessed his past sins to her well before they were married. The family did not, however, announce these details to the world, mostly because there was no conceivable reason to. That is, until someone leaked it to a tabloid, and the whole “scandal” exploded all over the media yesterday.

The backlash has been severe.
Not because Josh’s actions were terrible — though they were, of course — but because the Duggars are a prominent Christian family who regularly speak out on contentious social issues like gay marriage. They are roundly despised for their beliefs, their outspoken nature, and for the parents’ decision to have 19 kids. Progressive trolls have been anxiously waiting for a chance to burn them down and dance on their ashes, and now they’ve finally been given the opportunity.
It certainly hasn’t gone to waste. Just a cursory look at the blogosphere and my social media feeds reveals legions of people positively giddy about this situation. Relieved. Ecstatic. Finally, they say, these Christians have been proven frauds! They are sinners! Hypocrites! Jesus is a lie! Christianity is false!
Josh Duggar has already lost his job, been publicly shamed, and had his name permanently sullied by these revelations, but critics are not satisfied. They want the show canceled and anyone who supports the family to give up and join the mob of stone throwers and witch burners. They say that Josh is not the only villain here — his parents are also guilty for not going to the police immediately.
Now, I’m actually supposed to be on vacation at the moment, but while the vultures gleefully descend upon this family, I feel the need to make a few points of clarification:
1) The Duggars are Christian. The Duggars are conservative. The Duggars don’t believe in gay marriage. Someone in the Duggar family did something terrible.
These are all facts. None of these facts conflict. None of these facts disprove any of the other facts. From the way liberals always react in these situations, you’d think that a Christian committing a sin somehow delegitimizes the faith itself, but that’s not quite accurate.
Not the Duggars, not anyone, claim that a faith in Jesus bestows perfect holiness on the faithful.
Share:
They would indeed be correct in their assessment if the central tenet of the Christian faith was that all believers in Christ are without sin or blemish. But far from that being a doctrine of the religion, it is actually the precise opposite of what Christians believe. None of us — not the Duggars, not anyone — claim that a faith in Jesus bestows perfect holiness on the faithful. It is because of our sinful nature that we need Him. When we sin, we do not disprove that thesis; we underscore it.
A Christian failing to live up to his faith does not make him a hypocrite. It makes him cowardly, perhaps. It makes him selfish. It makes him flawed. It makes him sinful. It makes him any number of things, but not necessarily a hypocrite. A hypocrite is an insincere person who misrepresents his own beliefs. But saying that you believe something is wrong, only to turn around and do it, doesn’t prove that you never held that belief. It just proves that you were too weak to stand by it.
I’m not diminishing Josh Duggar’s infractions. As I said, he did something very bad. Horrendous. Disturbing. Evil. These were major sins. But Christians commit major sins sometimes, which is the whole reason why Jesus died on the cross.
That doesn’t negate or condone anything, but it shows that Christianity does not hide from the sinfulness of man. A Christian understands the depravity of human nature, so when a brother or sister does something depraved, our faith is not shaken.
2) Speaking of hypocrites, I’m going to be very frank with you: I simply don’t believe most progressives actually care that Josh Duggar touched his sisters when he was 14. I don’t believe they are upset about it, or that it offends them, or that they are morally troubled by it. I don’t believe them. I just don’t.
I think they’re the real hypocrites.
After all, Lena Dunham admitted to inappropriately touching her sister, and she told the story in a jovial way, as if it were an amusing anecdote. Unlike Josh — who repented long ago, and when it was made public owned up to it and apologized again — Lena responded by telling her critics in the right wing conspiracy to “back the f**k up, bros.” While Duggar called his own behavior inexcusable, Dunham described the people upset about her behavior as “disgusting old men.”
Yet Dunham remains a liberal hero.
Just like Bill Clinton, who was credibly accused of rape multiple times. And Harvey Milk, a gay rights icon who got his very own Hollywood biopic, and a creep who regularly sodomized teenage boys. Progressive culture is filled to the brim with rapists, molesters, and deviants, but they never seem worried about any of it until some well known Christian crosses the line.
It’s always interesting to watch progressives discover sexual morality just in time to denounce a right winger, only to shed the pretense as soon as the next liberal pervert comes out of the woodwork.

They are moral opportunists. They are the actual hypocrites. This outrage is a charade. A circus. A show. A political ploy.
It always is.
3) I know I’m opening myself up to serious criticism here, but let me be honest with you: If my own son, God forbid, came to me and admitted to doing what Josh Duggar did, I don’t know that I’d immediately run to the cops.
Would you? Is it really that simple? The decision to have your child arrested as a sex offender would be an automatic thing for you? Really?
I guess I’m just a horrible person then.
I don’t know all of the details. Nobody outside of the family does or ever will. But it appears that Josh’s parents attempted to address the situation within their family before going to the church, and then eventually to a law enforcement officer. Again, there might be parts of this story that would change my analysis, but right now, based on what we know, it seems that they handled this the right way. Or at least, I can’t say for sure that I would have known any better way to go about it.
As a parent, you have to think whether your 14 year old son deserves to have his life ruined over his mistakes. Maybe you’d decide that he does. I can’t say I’d agree.
Either way, there’s no good answer. No simple answer. No happy answer. Something really, really bad has happened, and now you have to figure out the next step.
It’s not easy to know the next step, but it is certainly easy for the rest of us to stand off at a distance, 12 years later, and declare that they took the wrong one.
4) I’m confused about when past sins are relevant and when they aren’t. Today, I’m told Josh Duggar’s actions from 12 years ago ought to be enough to, as Montel Williams declared, forever brand him a “slimebag” and a “danger to kids.” But I can recall recent cases, like Mike Brown’s, where past crimes were completely irrelevant, even though the past crime happened, like, three minutes before he assaulted Officer Darren Wilson.
I’m having trouble following the logic.
5) Not that it matters, but I don’t say any of this as a fan of “19 Kids and Counting.” I respect the fact that it’s wholesome entertainment, but if not for my wife demanding we watch it every Tuesday, I doubt I’d ever tune in.
That said, I admire the family. They are living by their convictions, in defiance of cultural trends, and clearly bestowing a strong faith in all of their children. That faith hasn’t, as we established, made any of them perfect saints, but it seems genuine.
Many people look at them like freaks because they have 19 kids. Personally, I wish we all had the courage to be freaks. That doesn’t mean we all need to have 19 kids, but it does mean that we ought to be living and acting in ways that seem radical in our society.
I don’t see the Duggars as pretentious or holier-than-thou or snobbish or whatever other stock insult weak-minded secularists always throw at devout Christians. I see them, instead, as people who have the gumption to live according to their convictions. They may not live it perfectly, but it appears they’re trying, which is more than I can say for many in our culture.
So go ahead and crucify the Duggars if you like. Burn them at the stake. Rip them to shreds. I won’t be joining you.
Instead, I’ll be off to the side praying that you can endure it when the mob eventually turns around on you."

Makeovers Before and After

Soooo, I'm sitting in a dark hotel room a couple of hours away from home with hubs and three grand boys asleep. I have two hours or so of quiet!!!! The boys' Aunt Siddy and Uncle Andrew are getting married tomorrow so we are helping out with getting the boys back and forth to all the festivities!

A couple of weeks ago my dear friend, Robin, flew in from Nashville, TN to help me redo a dining table and a dressing table. What a GIFT!!! We worked for three days and got them both done before she had to fly home! What a great friend!!!

Before picture of the table and chairs: (I had started sanding.)

AFTER:

After sanding, we used General Finishes Java Gel Stain on the top of the table. Then we wiped it down with Aniline Powder Stain in a silver grey color. It is a dye-type stain and is an amazing product! We finished the table off with a few coats of Minwax wipe-on Poly. The bottom of the table (and the chairs) is painted with Repurposed Chromo Color, Crisp White Linen (chalk) paint. (No need to sand before painting). This paint is AMAZING! I have used Annie Sloan paint before….and I really like it! BUT, and this is HUGE, the Repurposed Chromo Color paint is a one step paint. You do NOT have to wax after painting. You just wipe it with steel wool and it is as smooth and slick as if you had used wax! This is an AMAZING product! After painting and using steel wool we wiped on Amy Howard's dark wax and then buffed. We distressed the chairs JUST A SMALL AMOUNT. For my Mother's Day gift, Hubs covered the seat cushions with a Buffalo Plaid material in black and cream (from Hobby Lobby). I think the table and chairs turned out GREAT! (There are two table leafs that are not shown in pics)

Next, we did an old dressing table that my mom had when I was a baby.
Before:

We did the same thing on the dressing table but the top was only stained….we didn't use the die!
I was very pleased with the outcome and forever indebted to Robin for all she did those four quick, but hard, days!!

Side by side comparisons:

The pictures aren't the best but they show a little of the before and after!
I am pleased with the results but cannot IMAGINE doing this for a living…or even for a hobby! It is HARD work people!!! :)

My Mom and My Girl

Two of the most special people in my life are my mom and my girl!
I get to celebrate them both tomorrow!
Today is G's birthday and tomorrow is Mother's Day. My heart is overflowing with love as I celebrate with the two of them.

G is 35 today. She is married to a great guy and has these three beautiful baby girls! She is blessed with beauty and talent and the desire of her heart is for her family to know and love Jesus. She has the most precious, sensitive heart and I'm so very proud of her!

My mom is amazing! She is in her late seventies and looks twenty years younger! She has the youngest mind and still substitutes in preschool classrooms. She never complains about anything and is so accepting of all of us and the things we do.

I celebrate both of you with love and fondness and the greatest admiration! Thank you for loving me so well!
Happy Everything today and forever!

Nonny Tips/Chewing Gum

This is an unlikely subject for a Nonny Tip, but, it works!

By the time the grands get to be about three years old, most of them are old enough to chew gum without swallowing it. It is such a treat for them, because most of them don't get a lot of gum at home. It is something you have to really watch them with so they don't take it out of their mouths and *lose it* somewhere! :)

A few years back I heard about chewing gum being used as a calming tool to help children with ADHD and other issues. It helped with focusing and/or calming down. It's amazing to me how on point this is! I decided to try it. It works. If you have a grand that is fidgety in a car seat or while doing an activity such as art or listening to a story….give them a half piece of gum. I usually buy regular gum or bubblegum. I know there is sugar in it, but, I'd rather them have a small bit of sugar than the fake stuff! It's pretty magical the focus they have when chewing gm.

Also, gum helps as a reward. One of the toughest challenges as a Nonny is car seats. UGH! I believe in them 100%. I'm an advocate for them being hooked in correctly and used until they are eight. BUT, it's a pain getting everyone buckled up. Soooooo, when they reach the age of being able to get in the seat themselves, I promise them gum if they climb up in the car and get in their seat and sit there until I get each person buckled in properly. This Nonny is not beyond a bribe.

I try to remind them every few minutes, *When you are done chewing, give the gum to Nonny.* It works most of the time.

Just a little Nonny tip to help make things easier. If you have any tips, share them with me in the comments. I'm always looking for new tricks of the trade!

And, just a couple of old pics of the three big boys!

Blog Questions!!!

Stacey, at The Yarbrough's blog, shared this survey with me. I thought I would go old school and fill it out!! I included some random, old pictures of the grands....just because I don't like a post without pictures!!!

1.  What made you start blogging?

I started reading a Caring Bridge blog about a little girl I knew who had cancer. That lead me to other Caring Bridge blogs and ultimately to blogs about fashion, decorating, children, etc. Then, my DIL, Jenny, started a blog and talked me into starting mine! I'm so glad I did. I have the blog posts printed into books every year and it's a way to journal and have pictures printed at the same time! One day I hope my grandchildren will enjoy seeing a part of their childhood and know how much they meant to me. My first blog post: Pressure From The DIL.

2.  What are some of your favorite blogs?

I have so many!!! They change every month or two! Right now my favorites are:

So many of the bloggers I use to read have stopped blogging. Instagram and Facebook have taken over. I really like FB and IG too (as a matter of fact, IG is just so easy and it's why I don't blog as much either)

3.  Where is your favorite place to vacation?

ANYWHERE! I love a road trip!

4.  What do you enjoy doing in your down time?

Spending time with family. Reading. Traveling.

5.  What is your favorite food to eat for dinner?

White Pizza with veggies.

6.   What are 3 beauty products that you can't live without?

Lipstick. Mascara. Foundation.

7.  If we were to open your purse, what would we find?

Lipstick (duh). Calendar. Debit card. Cell Phone.

8.  Who is your hero?

Outside of people I know, The Duggars would be my heroes. They live simple lives that glorify God.

9.  What are your favorite TV shows?

Nineteen Kids and Counting. Fixer Upper. Little Couple. Little People Big World.

10.  What is your favorite music to listen to?

Christian. Country. Oldies.

Tell me how you'd answer some of these!!

Nope, Didn't Fall Off The Face Of The Earth!

Good grief. How did this much time pass since I last blogged? It's not like things aren't happening. I would often think *I need to blog this!* And well, then life would get in the way and before I knew it, two months had passed. I'm going to try to hit some of the highlights!

Valentine's Day was fun as usual. We went to the little soda shoppe we go to each year with some great friends! So fun!!!

We celebrated lots of birthdays in February. My mom, my FIL and hubs to name a few. Life got in the way and we couldn't get everyone together to celebrate this year. But we each celebrated in our own ways and are still so thankful for our families!! The kids all gave Poppy and me the GREATEST gift for our birthdays! They had Jared (at Jared's Drawings) hand draw a portrait of our grandchildren. It is amazing and such a special gift to us! (Jared doesn't have a website that I could find but you can find him on FB.)

We had snow here in NC several times in February. Just a few inches pretty much shuts us down for days and the kids missed lots of school. A lot of the schools had to make up their days during spring break. Bummer!!

In March Poppy and I went away for a few days to celebrate my birthday. On the way, he surprised me with a visit to *Chef and the Farmer* Restaurant in Kinston, NC. You may have seen their television show (A Chef's Life) on PBS on Sunday nights! I am hooked on it now! I have watched every episode online. The food was AMAZING!!! If you ever have the opportunity, it's worth the visit!! They also own an oyster/burger bar….Boiler Room next door. We ate there on the way home from our trip. The two restaurants have totally different foods but are equally as good.

Also in March was our SIL's birthday! Do you know how blessed you are if you have a great son in law? I try not to take it for granted. He is so humble and is ALWAYS so grateful for what we do for him.

We celebrated Easter last weekend! It's hard to believe it's April already! All the kids and grandkids and my parents and other family members were at our house. The weather was gorgeous and we all had such a great time! I ordered a banner from Ever Thine Home. I adore it!! It's burlap on one side and says *I Am The Resurrection and the Life.* On Easter Sunday, you turn it around to the white linen side and it says *He Is Risen!*

Of course we had Meredith's Cookies on Easter! (no website but you can find her on FB @ Sweet Stuff by Meredith) She ships too!!

And, last, but you KNOW not least, I did get a picture of the nine grands. Not all of them were happy, but such is life. I was just glad to have the picture!!

Happy Spring Friends!
He is Risen Indeed!!

January Goals Update/February Goals

#3 and #9

I did okay with my January goals.

I did read three books. (I was a little distracted with reading because I got hooked on the SERIAL broadcasts. Have you listened? So intriguing! It's about a real life murder where a young man is serving a life sentence for the death of his former girlfriend. I listened to all twelve episodes and still feel torn about his guilt or innocence. Let me know if you have listened and what you thought!)

I did NOT clean out my attic. Can you say February?

I did reconnect somewhat with a few friends. Mostly by email, text, etc. only because of my work schedule right now.

I got to spend some time with my grandchildren this month. Not near as much as I would like though….more on the *one on one* time later.

February Goals

~Clean out the attic.

~Lose four pounds.

~Read *24/6*. A book written by Matthew Sleeth, MD about keeping the sabbath holy. I just started it and I think it's going to be encouraging.

~Drink more water.

Wish me luck! Believe it or not, the hardest thing for me is the water.
What's my deal???????????

Nonny Tips/Shaving Cream

I don't know WHY, but the kids LOVE to play with shaving cream!! I think it's because it's something normally banned to mommy and daddy's bathroom! :) It's surprisingly very easy to clean up and leaves the surface you play on clean and smelling great! With the little ones, I just squirt a little on the table....sometimes in the shape of a smile and sometimes their names written out. The older ones can squirt it themselves! Shaving cream is also great outside in the summer. They can squirt themselves, or each other, and you can hose them down afterwards for an easy clean up! I just buy the cheap, foam cream. (Make sure you don't buy menthol. If it gets in their eyes, the menthol burns.)

I usually put plastic aprons on them (These came from Ikea).
Part of the fun for them is helping clean up! They love to wipe up the mess they made with wet paper towels! No worry about the clean up....it's almost like cleaning without knowing it!

Just another NONNY TIP!

A Wonderful Opportunity!!

Kiki (as all the littles call her) is the oldest of the youngest group of nieces...if that makes sense! :) I remember the day she was born twenty years ago....I thought my heart would burst wide open!!!! Well, it's about to burst wide open again...with pride!!! Kiki is about to leave the country to study abroad. It's a dream of hers as her major in college right now is Spanish! Will you join me in praying for that sweet niece of mine? She leaves this weekend and though our family will miss her terribly, we are so excited for this opportunity for her. We love you Kiki and we are praying for God's favor on your sweet life.

Nonny Tips/Waist Apron

I often get emails from readers asking me for advice to make things run smoothly when their grandchildren visit. I am quick to remind them I certainly don't have all the answers. But, I am pretty organized and I have found that being organized is the key to things running smoothly when the grands come. So, with that in mind I thought I would do a little series on *Nonny Tips.* They don't always work....nothing does. BUT, I'll share what works for me and you can take it from there!

One thing I know, I don't have enough hands when the little ones are with me. I like to have my cell phone close by, and if you know me, I like my lipstick close by too! ( I know, I know, that should be the least of my worries when I am keeping the babies. But I can't stand the way my lips feel without it!) I also like to have tissues for dirty noses and a pack of baby wipes. Soooo, I had my friend, Connie, make me a *waist apron.* It's like the aprons waitresses wear. It has three deep pockets and will hold my cell phone, my lipstick, tissues, wipes and a few stray rocks or hair bows!! It's a little shorter than a regular apron so it doesn't get in my way or seem bulky. Just a little *Nonny Tip* to help make things a little easier when you need to be hands free!! (I guess an old fanny pouch would do the trick too!!!)

There you have it: My first Nonny Tip!! I hope to add to this often. If you have any suggestions, feel free to share!!

2015

2015 is upon us!

I don't usually make a lot of resolutions. But this year I do have some goals. Short term goals are a little easier for me to manage. So, I think I'll take one month at a time. (And add a sprinkle of grandbaby cuteness along the way!)

January

~I want to read more.
I love to read! I use to enjoy reading a lot. Especially books that were a *series.* I would barely finish one and dive into the next. Along came Blogs and Facebook and Instagram and GRANDCHILDREN :)... and reading got put on the back burner. I miss it. My goal is to read three books in January.
~I want to reconnect.
Because of things like social media, I have reconnected with people I don't have a day to day relationship with. I want to take the time to meet them for lunch, or send them a small gift, or at the very least, talk to them on the phone.

~I want to CLEAN OUT MY ATTIC. I have said for YEARS I was going to do this….and I DID do a few things. BUT, it is my goal in January to get it completely clean. Here's to my toughest goal!! CHEERS!

Side note:

All 15 cousins on Christmas Eve at my Mom and Dad's house. She buys them all matching pajamas. It's a wild, chaotic, wonderful night. None of them are perfect but they are all loved. THIS is Christmas!

Happy New Year!
Let's do this January!
